Are you a foreign qualified doctor who has had a General Medical Council registration rejected ?

If so, then contact Jayesh Jotangia, specialist GMC lawyer who can prepare and represent you at a GMC registration appeal hearing. He is an expert in professional disciplinary proceedings against the GMC as well.

GMC

The General Medical Council (GMC) regulates doctors in the United Kingdom. The organisation has various roles including setting standards for doctors, overseeing their education and training, maintaining a UK medical register and investigating any concerns against doctors in protecting the public.

GMC Appeals

There are various types of appeals at the General Medical Council:

GMC registration appeals
Specialist Register or CESR appeals
GP registration appeals
Licence to practice withdrawal appeals (revalidation appeals)
Licence to practice refusal appeals

For more information on the GMC please visit: www.gmc-uk.org

GMC Registration Appeals

Once a doctor applies for GMC registration, the application will be considered, approved or rejected. If rejected, a doctor will often have a right of appeal at the GMC itself and an investigating Panel will hear the case, which is completely independent of the GMC.
General Medical Council (GMC)

CESR Appeals

The GMC Appeals team handle all specialist register appeals and is independent of the GMC registration team. It constitutes a Panel that will hear an appeal made up of a Chair (legally qualified), a lay member and member in the faculty or specialty that the appellant applied under, i.e. psychiatrist or general surgeon, etc.
Often, a doctor will be offered a review at which point further representations and evidence can be provided to the evaluation team for consideration. However, if that is further rejected, then there are strict time limits to lodge an appeal at the GMC, which can be undertaken in person or on the papers only.

MPTS Fitness to Practise

The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service is accountable to the GMC, but runs independently from them. Their role is to adjudicate disciplinary proceedings against doctors whose conduct or fitness to practice has been called into question.
At a fitness to practice hearing, allegations of misconduct will be put to the doctor by the GMC barrister and the matter usually proceeds where both parties will present their case, witnesses called and examined, evidence looked at and experts called. At the end, legal arguments are made in summing up leaving the final decision of whether a doctor’s fitness to practice has been impaired or not. If so, the matter proceeds to a sanctions stage for the doctor. Depending on the allegations, the entire hearing could last a number of days and are usually held in Manchester.
Jayesh can advise, prepare and represent doctors facing an investigation of this nature at any stage.
